It’s
good to grow old in today’s society, especially since the advent of plastic surgery and Botox have revolutionized what and who we perceive to be beautiful. Gone are the days of witch-like old maids and socially shunned hags; there is no place in Western culture for the ugly or the wart infested.
But one can’t help but wonder what exactly sparked our obsession with youthful, dewy skin and wrinkle-free foreheads… Can we really blame new media for our drastically unrealistic expectations, or must we point the finger inwards and admit to our own sense of vanity?
Either way I find myself drawn to the exotic pots and bright colours which light up the makeup counters at department stores across the continent, in the never-ending search for self perfection; because if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, at the end of the day, I’m the one staring back at myself in the mirror… and DAMN do I look good!
