So unless you’re living under a rock – or have chosen to completely disassociate yourself from the world of pop culture – you’ve heard about the shitshow that was Kanye West at this year’s VMAs.
Just in case you are under said rock, here’s what I’m referring to:
So the moral of the story? Kanye West is a big, big douche. I mean, not that we didn’t already know that before – what with his God complex, self-righteous blog, pretentious haircut and exhibitionist ex-stripper girlfriend. But THIS big of a douche? To basically hurl eggs at the wide-eyed innocent sixteen-year-old country singer while she stood there in shock and near tears? WHO DOES THAT?
Kanye. Kanye the douche.
I mean, I get that he’s chummy with Jay-Z, but does he even really KNOW Beyonce? Are they pals? Because I’m pretty sure if they were pals, she wouldn’t have looked as horrified as she did when Kanye made his grand gesture. He might as well have mounted the stage and declared that he was banging her sister. THAT’S how horrified Beyonce looked. He was like the drunken best man in The Wedding Singer: “Self-taught, no guitar lessons, thank you very much, POP.”
And I mean, yes, Single Ladies was an epic video that spawned SNL skits, black leotards and sweet-ass choreographed dance moves, but Taylor Swift is … Taylor Swift! You don’t have to be a fan of her music to think Kanye pulled a totally uncalled for, un-classy and disgraceful act. I don’t even like Taylor’s music, but I was still happy to see her take the stage beaming like a little princess receiving her crown. She was so cute and happy! Even the most jaded musicians put their cynicism aside to share in her joy – even Lady Gaga in her … outfit (?). But Katy Perry said (Tweeted) it best – “FUCK U KANYE. IT’S LIKE U STEPPED ON A KITTEN”.
And Katy wasn’t the only one. Celebrities – and the rest of us – took to our Twitters in droves to curse the shit out of the self-righteous, tasteless rap star. Here are some gems:
Spencer Pratt: Let’s be very clear King Spencer would never do anything like what Kanye just did to a sweet soul like Taylor!
Heidi Montag: congrats @taylorswift13 on your vma!!! you deserve it more than anyone!! I saw the devil in action when kanye west stole your mic! you rock!!!
Kat Dennings: I’m throwing away my Kanye glasses. They were 8 bucks, no skin off my apple.
Perez Hilton: WTF Kanye???
Michelle Branch: or as the French like to say douche (re: Kanye)
Pink: kanye west is the biggest piece of shit on earth. Quote me.
However, the night was salvaged as Beyonce earned my – and likely thousands of others’ – utmost respect, calling Miss Swift to the stage to relish in her well-deserved and nearly-stolen moment of glory.
So in conclusion?
Kanye West is a massive tool. And his pathetic apology (“I’M NOT CRAZY YALL, I’M JUST REAL. SORRY FOR THAT!”) is meaningless since he likely posted it only because his publicist was near death as a result of his selfish/drunken/horrible decision.
Let’s destroy last year’s Kanye glasses in unison as we bask in the fact that Taylor has a long career ahead of her. I’m not sure the same can be said for Kanye West.

The horror! OH ANNE.
Haha I think this whole thing is absolutely ridiculous. Mostly because it shows how the entire star system is a giant show put on for our amusement. Kanye is caught up in it like the rest of them, and damnit, he’s not as bad as you make him out to be! Come on! Isn’t the entire blogoverse getting very uppity about something as silly as a social faux pas. You know what Kanye is? A man who wears his heart on his sleeve. Does he have an Ego? Of course. Can you blame him for it? It’s his Ego and art that brought him to where he is – and without that he wouldn’t be one of rap’s most critically acclaimed superstars. I don’t think there is really a mean bone in his body – I think he just isn’t very self-aware of how seemingly out of touch he appears. I appreciate the man’s genuine nature, and his insistence on saying what’s on his mind and being confident in his craft.
And lets be honest, this entire thing happened at the MTV Music Video Awards, which is itself a giant industry show that is bought and sold with whatever trends are the days flavour. They don’t award videos on creativity, they award them on popularity. Let’s stop feeling so bad for a country musician that makes more money than all of us by making videos about being in highschool and falling in love with boyz.

Sorry there Danjo, but that last argument could be made in favor of Anne as well. It IS the MTV Video Awards, and they don’t hold any warrant on anything…so why exactly should Kanye feel inclined to interrupt a musicians acceptance speech for their very first “Award” at that show, when he knows damn well they hold no merit on anything whatsoever??
That being said, Anne, you should never, EVER quote anything that Spencer Pratt or Heidi Montag tweet. EVER. It’s goes against everything that is holy.
If Kanye were really a classy guy, then he should have simply waited like every other sane person and lashed out at the atrocity he felt took place afterwards to one of the press members. She was set to perform right after that for crying out loud!! He ruined THAT for her too!!
The one thing I have yet to see mentioned though is the offense that Kanye pulled against the network. I mean, yes he hurt Taylor Swift, that’s a given, but what about MTV having to deal with all this unrehearsed bull that came out of no where?? He completely through their show right out the window, and in my eyes, was revoked an invitation to any future MTV Awards event. You don’t pull that kind of crap, no matter who you are. And that’s the biggest problem. He thinks he’s big enough to have that power, when the fact of the matter is, no one does.
Sorry Dan, Anne gets my vote in this one (Speidi quoting aside).
